Northern Region at a Glance
Northern Saskatchewan encompasses the region north of Saskatoon
to the Northwest Territories, and borders
Alberta to the west and Manitoba
to the east. The area includes communities like La
Ronge, St.
Walburg, Denare
Beach, Uranium
City and Saskatchewan's third largest city, Prince
Albert. The region has a number of significant natural attractions, most notably
Prince
Albert National Park, a large boreal wilderness area that boasts 230 species
of birds, including elusive white pelicans, as well as numerous hiking trails
and learning activities. Within the park is the former home and final resting
spot of renowned conservationist and author Grey Owl, and visitors today can visit
his rustic cabin. Although beach-going does not instinctively come to mind when
one thinks of Northern Saskatchewan, the region boasts over 100,000 lakes, several
of which have stunning sandy beaches, including Brightsand
Lake near St. Walburg, Big
Buffalo Beach at Buffalo
Narrows and the Main
Beach at Denare
Beach, one of Northern Saskatchewan's first resort towns. With all those lakes,
Northern Saskatchewan is famous for another activity—fishing,
which attracts anglers from around the world to this remote natural wonderland.
